Try this – the tartan skirt
When tradition meets fashion
Plaids are no strangers to the A/W season. Tartan and check prints fabrics are definitely a must for the winter seasons, but this fall especially they got an unexpected twist with color combinations and matching fabrics – bringing a modern touch but at the same time keeping the traditional side of tartan. The plaid designs, a symbol of the most traditional of Scotland, is used for both woolen and bouclé outerwear, as well as in country chic or sophisticated jackets, pants, skirts, shirts and dresses. My first memory of tartan is my school uniform – a skirt falling below the knee that I used to love. So when I saw what was essentially the exact same green and navy print on the Michael Kors autumn/winter 2018 runway, I immediately had flashbacks of that scratchy material and school halls.
Is it even fall without tartan?
What makes it different this year however, is how it takes an unfamiliar step away the usual print. Usually, we see the red and black print on lounge wear and casual outfit look books. Take inspiration from the A/W 18 runways and mix up your tartan with contrasting elements: Leather pairings, PVC boots, gold jewelry and most definitely a black winged eyeliner. Brands like Versace and Moschino are giving the classic tartan a feisty and rock-n-roll spin. The Acne Studios’ wrap-effect skirt is a great way to work the trend. It’s cut from tweed and has minimal gold hardware and frayed edges. Perfect to be match with some boots to draw the eye to the asymmetric hem and a white blouse – a classic and elegant style for every occasion!
