The Fair-a-porter Standard

Fair-a-porter began with a grand idea:
to change fashion from an anonymous product into a known product by telling its multifaceted story and providing a platform only for those companies that care about transparent and ethical production.

Who We Are
Fair-a-porter was founded by fashion journalist Alex Bohn and grows as a collaboration between friends and likeminded partners. Fair-a-porter curates the fashion industry´s good and best practice and provides an alternative to today´s anonymous fashion. We should not be bound to accept fashion that may be a product of social und ecological injustice as a way of life. Instead we can make responsible shopping decisions and take pride in the style and integrity of each piece we own.

What We Do
As globalization spreads local production has become the exception and supply chains are increasingly long and complicated. At Fair-a-porter we select our products by how much we know about them: From the sourcing of the raw materials, to their country of origin, to the steps a brand takes to grant transparent production. We select only products of brands that meet at least one to all of the following criteria:

Instead of “fast” fashion we offer products made from high quality materials and produced through skilled craftsmanship. The products we curate are made to last and thus have a low environmental impact. Where possible we select brands that offer a repair and care service.

An environmentally sound production process is crucial to us. We consider a variety of factors from reduced-water-consumption, low-energy-production, non-toxic processing, waste management, the use of renewable resources as well as processing techniques such as recycling, upcycling and cradle-to-cradle.

All raw materials must be at least partially certified organic or recycled. Animal-free, vegan raw materials are also part of our line of goods.

Many of the brands we select are members of organizations such as the Fair Wear Foundation, Made by, the Ethical Trading Initiative or the Business Social Compliance Initiative. All of them support them in their efforts towards building an ethical supply chain while also controlling and evaluating the process.
