by the winner of the Woolmark Prize, talented Uruguayan lady Gabriela Hearst
When I met Gabriela Hearst this february during New York Fashion Week I was thrilled: Not only was her entire collection truly beautiful, simple, with well thought out details, luxurious in its use of high quality fabrics and ethically made throughout the entire production chain – the designer (and owner of her namesake enterprise) herself was such a striking mix of smarts, collected cool and warmth that I couldn’t help but like her righ away. Today she has won the US Woolmark prize and rightly so: Her designs are great and her knowledge of wool is outstanding.
She comes from a family of sheep farmers in Uruguay and has been in fashion for quite a bit. After finding out that conventional production depressed her, she decided to go out on her own and launched Gabriela Hearst a little over a year ago. All of her designs are unfussy yet elegant and once you put them on you won’t want to take them off, ever. When we met she wore the denim puffer vest that I’m featuring here and I think it’s high on my wish list for the next sesaon as well. Pair it with one of her dresses and either ankle heels or boots and you’r ready to go wherever you are and whatever you intend to do.
