We’re in love with this Italian tradition Margaux shared
Today’s the day of celebrating – us! On International Women’s day we can pat ourselves on the shoulders for being the super women we are. It’s well worth taking a look at the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women today, because after all this is still very much a world run by men. So speak up and stick up for each other and kiss each other on the cheek rather than kiss butt at any time.
If you’re still looking for way to celebrate today, here’s a tradition I learned to love in my years growing up in Rome: As a sign of love and respect, men give as a gift to women mimosa flowers. From little boys giving mimosa to their mothers and classmates to older couples who have been doing it for the last 50 years… the whole city turns into a beautiful yellow paradise which smells heavenly. Growing up in Rome at the end of the day I would go home with mimosas from my father, my boyfriend and even my classmates. Receiving all these flowers as a form of respect and love, is always nice – even for someone like me who isn’t all that much into flowers.
Historians cannot agree when and why the act of giving mimosa began, but there is documented evidence that men in Rome on March 8, 1946, gave the fragrant flowers to their wives, mothers, sisters and daughters as a sign of love and appreciation. Why mimosas? Well, because it’s one of the few flowers who blossoms beginning of March and is not expensive – giving the opportunity to everybody to be able to buy them. Now you might want to remind me that Berlin is not Rome and there’s hardly a flower shop that has mimosas in March here. But hey, my guess is that yellow tulips, roses and gardenia will be just as appreciated.
Aside from the flowers, anyone who loves the smell of mimosa will love the Dyptique Mimosa candle. The scent mixed with hay and honey, recall the French Riviera with the sea in the distance. For the sassy ones why not opt for a nice lipstick from Und Gretel, infused with moisturizing organic avocado oil and babassu butter, the hydrating formula also helps protect lips from free radical damage with vitamin E.
We have the right gift for the fashionista and the readers as well! The bestseller #Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso is the latest inspiring book, where the author revels how she went form having a number of dead-end jobs and how she managed to become the owner and founder of successful online clothing retailer, Nasty Gal. The book means to inspire aspiring entrepreneurs. A must-read for millennial women. Mansur Gavriel knows how to do Women’s day with the Lady Tote and some mimosas – just impossible to resist them!
