Berlin based luxury label
WHO… Philomena was founded by Julia Leifert in 2014 in Berlin. The label is named after her great-grandmother. At the interface between ethics and aesthetics, Philomena has been offering high quality products for the strong woman who loves fashion and leads a conscious lifestyle in harmony with the environment and nature. Philomena stands for carefully designed and handcrafted garments that are manufactured in compliance with high ecological and social standards.
DOES WHAT… In order to meet the ever-increasing need of consumers for trust and commitment, they design fashion with awareness and a clear message. The collections follow no entertaining trends, but are designed for longevity and good combinability due to the timeless design and high-quality workmanship.
WHERE… They produce in Berlin with a small company and at the border with Poland, 150km form Berlin. It’s a small family owned production that they have stared working with at the beginning of the project. They have a close relation with them and they often go there. Julia, the creative director, usually goes four times per year. It’s almost only women working there and the owner is an old lady which whom they have established a real friendship by now. There are 25 employees and are specialized in luxury fashion – they are just amazing! Keeping the production close to the HQ is due to the fact that they can save money on transportation and also they can check the production way more regularly. Producing in the region was just a natural decision.
AND HOW IS IT ETHICAL… Besides producing in Europe (Berlin and Poland) where they have constant relations with the factories and visit regularly, Philomena pays great attention to the fabrics they use. Most of the fabrics they use are from Europe – mainly France, Italy and Germany. They source the organic cotton from Turkey, virgin wool from Austria or the UK. They get the marino wool from a small community of farmers in New Zealand and silk from India.
