The luxury sustainable label
WHO…Faustine Steinmetz is the London-based French designer who starts her studies at Atelier Chardon Savard, to then moved to London to complete her Masters in the prestigious Central Saint Martins under the guidance of Professor OBE Louise Wilson. She is known for her uncompromising artisanal approach to her collections. Faustine focuses on creating timeless collections, with simple pieces that have become cult classics amongst her costumers. After working fro Henrik Vibskov and Jeremy Scott, she launched her label under her namesake in 2007.
DOES WHAT… As a self-taught weaver, Faustine focus on iconic pieces allows for challenging and innovative material and sculptural creations. Compelling surfaces give way to simple silhouettes, for collections which are the antidote to throwaway clothing. She started her label by unpicking the idea of denim and is well known for her trompe l’oeil felted “denims” and singular deconstructivist spirit.
…WHERE? Her business is quickly growing beyond her atelier in East London, where the intricate, hand-loomed pieces are made. Therefore, she has been thinking about ways she can soften the impact on the environment more and more. Steinmetz is looking into outsourcing some of her fabrications and pick up the thread to African artisans in Senegal, where her small production team in London leaves off this season. It’s a smart move, given the hand-weaving traditions of the region—and one that gives her time-honored practices a thoughtful new layer.
…AND HOW IS THAT ETHICAL? The specifics of Steinmetz sustainability vary from season to season. At the beginning she worked with sustainable cotton and mohair in lieu of the recycled denim. For Fall, all of her denim pieces are 50% recycled denim, and all the water used in re-pulping those old Diesel and G-Star pairs was recycled, thanks to her partnership with a sizable factory with that sort of capacity. Steinmetz believes that making the eco aspect simply incidental—rather than ramming it down the public’s throat—is the way to success and positive social outcome. At the end of the day, though, she is a strong believer of discouraging overconsumption.
