The German label produced the first designer jeans and stands for smart and modern design
WHO… The fashion label Closed was founded by Marithe and Francois Girbaud in Italy in 1978. In the early 1990s Hamburg-based Günther Giers bought the jeans brand together with business partner Hans Leplow and moved the headquarter to Germany. Together with his friends Til Nadler and Hans Redlefsen, Giers’ son Gordon took on the management of the brand in 2004. The friends had known each other since the 1980s and hence call Closed their family business. Their tasks are divided clearly: Gordon Giers, previously at Prada, is responsible for the design and products, whereas Til Nadler, previously at Gucci, is the strategic public relations and marketing part of the team and Hans Redlefsen is managing the brands’ finances. Closed has seen various designers, among them German designer Kostas Murkudis. One trademark of the brands are denims featuring x-pockets – back pockets placed at an exact angle of 33 degrees. Their ultimate classic style is the pedal jeans.
…DOES WHAT Closed offers fashion for women, men and kids as well as accessories such as bags and belts. The brand started with jeans that still are bestselling product. In addition to the classic Pedal Jeans, that was first produced in 1980 and was based on the uniform of bike messengers, Closed is known for its comfortable chino styles.
…WHERE? The Closed headquarter is in Hamburg, Germany. The brand produces most of its collection in Ancona, Italy, where the brand was founded. Closed has 21 stores in Europe and also sells through another 1700 other stores as well as at luxury e-tailers such as Mytheresa.
AND HOW’S THAT ETHICAL? The brand is manufacturing their collection in a family-run business in Italy, bags in Portugal. They keep an eye on ecological production processes, which is why they use the “Ozone Washing Process” where water is replaced by the natural ozone gas, a process that reduces the use of water. Since they introduced the stonewash technique that is a well-known production process to date, they are engaged in different research programs to find new and ecological ways of production. Closed products are also often handmade. The brand is also working with the animal rights organization Peta. Closed is not using fur, angora or down in any product and is assuring that all lambskins come from selected businesses in Italy and Spain where they are a by-product of the food industry.
